Alert Ambulance Service, Inc. is a subsidiary of Paramedic Systems, Inc. (PSI). PSI was established in 1986, and began operating as Rhode Island’s first and only Private Ambulance Company to date, providing 24-hour ALS – paramedic-level service.

In February 1989, PSI acquired Alert Ambulance Service, Inc. of Fairhaven, MA—a small ambulance company with four vehicles and a dozen employees.

In the nearly 25 years since, Alert Ambulance Service, Inc. has grown to include a corporate headquarters located in Fall River, MA and 11 satellite locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. We employ more than 375 employees across all our locations, offering a range of medical transportation services.

Together, Alert Ambulance and Paramedic Systems, Inc. continue to provide the highest level of emergency and non-emergency medical transport services to a growing number of hospitals and communities across Massachusetts and Rhode Island. 

History of Alert Ambulance

Pioneering Emergency Care Since 1986 Alert Ambulance has been a trusted name in emergency medical services since its founding in 1986. Over the years, the company has grown and evolved, expanding its services and strengthening its commitment to the communities it serves.

Here are some key milestones in Alert Ambulance’s rich history:

1986
The Founding of PSI

In August 1986, PSI opened its doors in Bristol, Rhode Island. With a focus on innovative emergency services, PSI became the first provider to operate a 24/7 paramedic intercept vehicle in Rhode Island, setting a new standard for round-the-clock, high-level care.

1989
The Acquisition of Alert Ambulance

In 1989, PSI acquired Alert Ambulance, a company founded in 1975, growing the fleet to four vehicles with locations in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, and Tiverton, Rhode Island. This strategic acquisition solidified Alert’s presence in the region, expanding its ability to serve a broader area.

1995
Key Acquisitions – Ocean State Ambulance and Medicoach

In 1995, PSI officially merged with Alert Ambulance, propelling the company’s growth. That same year, Alert acquired Ocean State Ambulance, based in Wakefield, Rhode Island, further expanding the company’s reach in southern Rhode Island. Additionally, Alert Ambulance purchased Medicoach, a specialty chair company in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, enhancing its ability to provide specialized care transport services.

2003
Roger Williams Mobile Care Acquisition

In 2003, Alert Ambulance expanded by acquiring Roger Williams Mobile Care, based at Roger Williams Hospital. This acquisition broadened the company’s service offerings and brought new employees into the Alert family, many of whom are still with the company today.

2005
Pathways Acquisition

In 2005, Alert Ambulance expanded again with the acquisition of Pathways, solidifying its position as a leader in non-emergency medical transportation across the region.

2021
The Launch of Alert Healthcare During the COVID-19 Pandemic

In 2021, Alert launched Alert Healthcare to address urgent COVID-19 needs, securing a state contract for testing, vaccination clinics, and MAB treatments. As the state’s top COVID-19 testing provider, Alert built strong partnerships with the Rhode Island Department of Health, driving EMS innovation by integrating nurses into ALS services. Today, Alert Healthcare continues to expand, offering Hospital-at-Home, Medical Respite, Mobile Integrated Health, and more, providing high-quality care in homes and communities across Rhode Island.
